Eastern Orthodox Christianity And Roman Catholic Christianity Religion Essay

Eastern Orthodox Christianity And Roman Catholic Christianity Religion Essay Until 1054 AD Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism were parts of a similar body the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. This date denotes a significant crossroads throughout the entire existence of every single Christian section. It assigns the absolute first significant division in Christianity and the start of groups. Contradiction between these two parts of Christendom had since a long time ago existed, however the hole between the Roman and Eastern chapels expanded all through the principal thousand years. In 1054 AD, a conventional split happened when Pope Leo IX, pioneer of the Roman branch, expelled the Patriarch of Constantinople, Michael Cerularius. He was the pioneer of the Eastern branch. Michael Cerularius, consequently, denounced the Pope in common banishment. Two essential debates at the time were Romes guarantee to an all inclusive ecclesiastical matchless quality and the adding of the filioque to the Nicene Creed. To the current date, the Eastern and Western places of worship stay partitioned and isolated. Be that as it may, in 1965, Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras consented to officially expel the shared suspension of 1054. Strict Differences 3 The Difference between Eastern Orthodox Christianity and Roman Catholic Christianity The Pope The fundamental distinction between Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic Christianity has to do with the acknowledgment of the Pope. Roman Catholics perceive the Pope as trustworthy. The Pope has preeminent authority over all places of worship, and he can usurp the intensity of a lower positioning church pioneer, for example, a cleric, religious administrator, or cardinal (OConner, 1997). The Eastern Orthodox additionally has different ministers with one being the most elevated priest, called the first among approaches, yet the Eastern Orthodox Church doesn't accept the most elevated positioning religious administrator, or diocese supervisor, to be faultless, nor do they award him with incomparable authority over all houses of worship (Collins Price, 1999). Limbo Another primary contrast is in the instructing of Purgatory. As per Roman Catholic religious philosophy, those spirits bound for paradise must persevere through a condition of refinement. They should be washed down of sins submitted on earth. The rest get lost for everlasting discipline. Likewise from a type of benefits or additional effortlessness gathered by the ideals of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and the holy people, indulgencies might be allowed. The effortlessness is applied to those in limbo so as to abbreviate their time there (OConner, 1997). Eastern Orthodoxy trains that after the spirit leaves the body, it excursions to the habitation of the dead (Hades). The spirit will stay in this state of pausing. Since some have a prevision of the magnificence to come and others a preview of their affliction, the condition of holding up is called Particular Judgment. At the point when Christ restores, the spirit rejoins its risen body to be decided by Him, and the great and unwavering hireling will acquire life. The unfaithful will spend time everlasting in damnation. Their transgressions and their unbelief will torment them as fire (Chadwick, 1995). Strict Differences 4 Doctrinal Development Concerning Doctrine, so as to legitimize new teaching, Roman Catholicism built up the hypothesis of Doctrinal Development. Roman Catholicism presents this religious philosophy as developing in stages to higher and all the more plainly characterized degrees of information. It shows that Christ gave us a unique store of confidence, and a seed which develops and develops throughout the hundreds of years. They accept that custom is similarly as significant as the Bible (OConner, 1997). Eastern Orthodoxy doesn't underwrite the view that the lessons of Christ have changed now and again. They accept that Christianity has stayed unaltered from the second that the Lord conveyed the Faith to the Apostles (Mat.28:18-20). Eastern Orthodox of the twenty first century accepts definitely what was trusted in the main century. Nicene Creed A significant difference between Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism revolves around the adding of the filioque to the Nicene Creed. This specific clash is otherwise called the Filioque Controversy. In Latin, this word implies and from the Son. It had been embedded into the Nicene Creed, changing the expression relating to the starting point of the Holy Spirit from who continues from the Father to who continues from the Father and the Son (Collins Price, 1997, p. 27). Roman Catholicism rolled out this improvement on the authority of the Pope. Eastern Orthodoxy accepted this rejected the Apostolic Tradition which consistently instructed that God the Father is the single Source of the Son and the Spirit (Collins Price, 1997). End There are numerous different contrasts between Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism. There are contrasts in how confidence is instructed, the quintessence of God, crafted by Christ, the Holy Canons, the secrets, the nature of man, and the Virgin Mary. One more would be the symbols of Orthodox love, and the sculptures of Catholic love. It ought to likewise be noticed that while there are numerous contrasts between Eastern Orthodoxy Strict Differences 5 what's more, Roman Catholicism, there are additionally numerous likenesses between Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism that ought to be concentrated too. Strict Differences 6

Grant Wood, American Gothic Painter

Grant Wood (1891 -1942) is one of the best-known and most revered American artists of the 20th century. His American Gothic painting is iconic. Some critics derided his regionalist art as influenced by pernicious political theories. Others saw hints of sly camp humor impacted by Woods closeted homosexuality. Fast Facts: Grant Wood Occupation: PainterStyle: RegionalismBorn: February 13, 1891 in Anamosa, IowaDied: February 12, 1942 in Iowa City, IowaSpouse: Sara Maxon (m. 1935-1938)Selected Works: American Gothic (1930), Midnight Ride of Paul Revere (1931), Parson Weems Fable (1939)Notable Quote: All the good ideas I ever had came to me while I was milking a cow. Early Life and Career Born in rural Iowa, Grant Wood spent much of his childhood on a farm. His father died suddenly in 1901 when Grant was ten years old. Following the death, his mother moved their family to the small nearby city of Cedar Rapids. Along with his older brother, Grant Wood took odd jobs to help provide financial support for their family. Wood showed an interest in drawing and painting while attending Cedar Rapids public schools. He submitted his work to a national competition in 1905 and won third place. The success cemented his determination to be a professional artist. Grant Woods boyhood home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Bill Whittaker / Wikimedia Commons / Creative Commons 3.0 While in high school, Grant Wood began designing stage sets with fellow artist Marvin Cone and began volunteering at the Cedar Rapids Art Association, which later became the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. Following high school graduation, Wood took a summer course at the Minneapolis School of Design and Handicraft in Minnesota. He also took art classes at the University of Iowa. In 1913, Grant Wood moved to Chicago, making jewelry to support himself and his night classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. Following the failure of his jewelry business, Wood returned to Cedar Rapids in 1916 and worked as a home builder and decorator to support his mother and his youngest sister, Nan. Rise to Prominence After World War I ended in 1919, Grant Wood took a position teaching art at a local Cedar Rapids middle school. The new income helped finance a trip to Europe in 1920 to study European art. In 1925, Wood left his teaching position to focus on art full time. Following a third trip to Paris in 1926, he decided to focus on the common elements of life in Iowa in his art, making him a regionalist artist. Residents of Cedar Rapids embraced the young artist and offered jobs designing stained glass windows, executing commissioned portraits, and creating home interiors. In the wake of national recognition for his paintings, Grant Wood helped form the Stone City Art Colony in 1932 with gallery director Edward Rowan. It was a group of artists who resided near Cedar Rapids in a village of whitewashed, tidy wagons. The artists also taught classes at nearby Coe College. Midnight Ride of Paul Revere (1931). Francis G. Mayer / Getty Images American Gothic In 1930, Grant Wood submitted his painting American Gothic to a show at the Art Institute of Chicago. It depicts, presumably, a farming couple, either married or a father and daughter, standing in front of their frame house with a large gothic window. The models for the couple were Grant Woods dentist and his younger sister, Nan. The Chicago Evening Post published an image of American Gothic two days before the show, and it became practically an overnight sensation. Newspapers across the country reproduced the image, and the Art Institute of Chicago bought the painting for their permanent collection. Initially, many Iowans criticized the work thinking that Grant Wood depicted them as grim-faced Puritans. However, some saw it as satire, and Wood insisted that it represented his appreciation for Iowa. American Gothic (1930). GraphicaArtis / Getty Images American Gothic remains one of the most iconic American paintings of the 20th century. Countless parodies from Gordon Parks stunning 1942 photo American Gothic, Washington, D.C. to the closing image of the opening credits for the 1960s TV show Green Acres are a testament to the enduring power of the portrait. Later Career Grant Wood painted most of his key works in the 1930s, including 1931s Midnight Ride of Paul Revere,—a theatrically-lit depiction of Henry Wadsworth Longfellows legendary poem—, and 1939s unique take on the George Washington cherry tree legend in Parson Weems Fable. During the period, he also taught art at the University of Iowa. By the end of the decade, he was one of the most famous American artists. Parson Weems Fable (1939). Amon Carter Museum / Wikimedia Commons / Public domain Unfortunately, the final three years of Grant Woods life and career were rife with frustration and controversy. His ill-considered marriage, according to his friends, ended in the late 1930s. Lester Longman, a devotee of European-led avant-garde modern art, became the chair of the art department at the University of Iowa. After clashes with Wood and public efforts to discredit him, the universitys most famous artist left his position in 1941. Later investigations discovered that rumors of homosexuality also drove some of the efforts to remove him from the university faculty. In 1941, just as it seemed that some of the controversies were settling down, Grant Wood received a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. He died a few months later in February 1942. Legacy For many casual observers of art, Grant Wood remains one of the most popular and revered of 20th-century American artists. Along with Thomas Hart Benton, Wood is one of the most prominent of American regionalist painters. However, the controversies that began at the University of Iowa have raised questions about his reputation since. Some critics dismissed regionalism as inspired by fascist and communist principles. Daughters of Revolution (1932). Francis G. Mayer / Getty Images Art historians also continue to reevaluate Grant Woods art in the light of his closeted homosexuality. Some see the satire and double meanings in his work as part of the camp humor sensibility in gay culture. Sources Evans, R. Tripp. Grant Wood: A Life. Knopf, 2010.Haskell, Barbara. The Greenwich Association For Retarded Citizens (g Essay Example For Students

The Greenwich Association For Retarded Citizens (g Essay .a.r.c.) Of GreenwicThe Greenwich Association for Retarded Citizens (G.A.R.C.) of Greenwich HighThe Greenwich Association for Retarded Citizens (G.A.R.C.) of GreenwichHigh is a group of students interested in interacting with disabled students. These students go to the high school as well, and look forward to getting toknow us. Each of the students have different disabilities but they each havethe desire to make friends. This group is totally volunteer basis for all ofits members, no one has to attend. I have been a member of this group for thethree years I have attended in Greenwich High. Spending a lot of time withthese children I have learned to understand that they are just looking to makefriends. I joined this group as a freshman because I had worked with childrenwith Down Syndrome during the eighth grade at Central Middle School. Myinterest carried on through out the years because of the numerous fun times Ihave had, and have made friends with many of the girls. They are all verypersonable and pleasant to talk with. They each have special characteristicsdefining them from the others, making each of them special in different ways, just like the rest us. Aside from the meetings that we have every so often to discussactivities we can do, we usually do fun and interesting activities. We go outfor pizza frequently because it seems to be the group consensus on what we wouldall like to eat. During the holidays we celebrate in interesting ways; onHalloween we have a party where every one gets dressed and brings candy. Forthe Christmas season we are going to celebrate with a party at a members houseand listen to Christmas carols, and have dinner. We have had bake sales andhave sold candy in order to raise money for the clubs activities. These areusually a success because every one participates and we all seem to functionwell as a group. When there are dances or football games at school we each takeone of the girls and its good for them because they get to interact with therest of the school at a big function. This club is not only fun, but its like going to a meeting with some ofyour friends. We are a small group and we all get along. Since we are a smallgroup it is also difficult for us to do a lot of things. It is difficult toeducate the larger part of the public who doesnt know what these kids are like. It is also hard to raise money to do many activities. It would be great if morekids would join each year, and it would be great if the ignorance level hadlowered. Many students just dont want to know anything of these kids. I choseto discuss G.A.R.C. because it is a group that could use help from the communityat Greenwich high, and I thought I could help by explaining exactly what we do. Why talk about something else, when I could tell of something I enjoy and thatneeds more attention.

The Life Lesson of Everyday Use by Alice Walker Essay Example

The Life Lesson of Everyday Use by Alice Walker Essay When Alice Malsenior Walker married Melvin Roseman, they were considered to be the first legally interracial couple in the state of Mississippi. Walker is one of those writers who when someone reads one of her works they automatically get pull to all of her writings. She writes with her heart and writes from experiences that she has went through. She is an all around wonderful person who loves and would help everyone no matter their race, sex, and/or their status in society and she doesnt let her money get to her head.As said by Astrid H. Roemer, She isnt the girl on the book jackets; and she isnt all glamour and chic like Toni Morrison; and she isnt provocative and flashy like Buchi Emecheta; and she didnt lose herself in all her American dollars. In everything she does with conviction, Alice Walker is very open-hearted and wonderfully unpredictable. Alice Walkers life along with her involvement in the Contemporary Era of American literature strengthened the literary merit of her sh ort story Everyday Use.Alice Walker was born on February 9th, 1944 to Willie Lee and Minnie Tallelah Grant in Eatonton, Georgia. Now her family wasnt very wealthy; her dad only earned $300 a year and her mother was a domestic who worked as a seamstress just so her family would have more money. Their home was small and cramped especially with 5 older brothers living there with her. It was extremely hot in the summer and equally cold in the winter and also if it rained the roof would leak. Walker was a very intelligent girl who had no trouble getting through school and the teachers saw that, so she was placed in first grade ahead of everyone else. But her good luck would come to an end.At the age of 8, Walker was outside playing a game of Cowboys and Indians with one of her older brothers when he struck Walker in her right eye with a BB pellet on accident. The boy was so scared that he would get in trouble that he convinced Walker to lie and say she got struck by a stray piece of wire . Her parents didnt take her to the doctor right off because they thought that it wasnt that bad and that it could be treated at home. But as time went by her eye got worse and than it got infected and she came down with a fever. Her parents than realized that she needed to go to a doctor because it wasnt and wouldnt get any better if not. When the doctor took a look at her eye he asked Walkers parents why they had waited so long and that she would loose sight in her right eye. He also said that since the eyes are sympathetic, it was possible that Alice could lose sight in both her eyes. But by the grace of God her eye finally healed but it developed into what Walker described as a hideous white scar. Walker who was popular, pretty, well liked, intelligent, outgoing, and despised was now picked on, was never talked to, close herself off from everything, hated school, and was a hateful person towards others all because of the scar on her right eye.You now see this in her writing and e specially in her short story called Everyday Use. In Everyday Use Walker wrote from experience and she portrays how she felt when she was little through Maggie. Now Maggie, Dees little sister, has scars and walks with a limp because he house burned down and she was left there and Dee wouldnt help get her get out. Well Dee made fun of her and would always say that she couldnt do anything for herself and that she would always be this way. Now she lived her life like this till the age of 14 when she went and got the cataract removed. This was a new beginning for Walker and she knew it.Walker was awarded a rehabilitation scholarship for handicapped students from the state of Georgia, so she moved out of her parents home at the age of 17 to attend Spelman College, a historically Black institution dedicated to educating African-American women. While she was at Spelman she was an active participant in the fight for Civil Rights. Walker spoke out everywhere and got to meet important people such as John Lewis, Julian Bond and she even met Dr. Martin Luther Kings wife, Coretta Scott King before she left for a World Youth Peace Festival in Finland. But walker didnt stay long at Spelman because she began to think of it as being to puritanical. She than attended Sarah Lawrence, which was mostly an elite, white womens college in Bronxville. Before her senior year at Sarah Lawrence Walker received a grant and decided to go to Kenya and Uganda as an exchange student. But when Walker came back she learned that she was pregnant. Walker didnt want this and she didnt need it in her life right now. She would sleep with a razor blade underneath her pillow at night because she had had thoughts of suicide. She couldnt take anymore so she finally confined in one of her closest friends. Her friend was really worried about her so she found her a doctor who would perform an abortion. After it was over with Walker suffered from anxiety and depression. So to help herself Walker started to w rite poems and she gave them to her mentor, Muriel Rukeyeser. As time went by she got better and she finally meet a guy who she loved more than ever. On March 17, 1967 Melvyn Roseman and Walker got married. Walker later becomes an attorney who prosecutes civil rights cases. Their marriage to one another didnt last long but only till 1976. But in 1969, before they ended it, they gave birth to their daughter who they named Rebecca Grant.Through out the rest of Walkers life she would receive a Guggenheim Foundation grant, opens up her own publishing company and than later closes Wild Trees Press. Walker now lives in Mendocino, California with her dog-named Marley.EraThirdly we will mention her involvement in the Contemporary Era. Walker is very effident in her writing. Walker uses the elements of blending fiction with non-fiction. Walker also uses the elements of experimenting with physical appearance of their work. An example is when Walker is writing in Everyday Use she clearly states that the family is poor but in real live Walkers family was poor to and Walker relived how she use to live through the characters in Everyday Use.Another example is when at the age of eight Walker got shot in her right eye and left a scar. Well in her short story Maggie had scars all along her body and would walk with a limp because of the house fire and Dee made fun of her. Well Walker got made fun of because of the scar so Walker used how she felt and put her feelings into the character of Maggie. Walker will also use the elements of dialogue alone to write her stories or poems.MeritLastly when the reader reads Everyday Use the reader will see Walker use the theme of love. In Everyday Use it was clear the love between Maggie and her mother. In Walkers life she had a passion, a love to write and express her feelings. Also when reading Walker uses the theme of honestly. In the short story the mother told Dee that the reason she wouldnt give the quilts to her was because she didnt kn ow the true meaning of them and Maggie did.In Everyday Use the quilts are a symbol of Maggies family and Walker tries to get the reader to understand the true meaning and why they mean so much. Also the house is a symbol because it shows that no matter how poor a person is it doesnt matter because the love of someone who cares for is more important than all the money in the world. The reader will see this in her writing because Walker knows how important love for someone or something is and she portrays this love and feeling in her writing. So in conclusion Walkers experiences as a member of a poor family and with a strong sense of the Contemporary concepts have influenced the style of writing Walker used in Her short story Everyday Use. This short story is one of the best in the Contemporary Era and Walker uses all her heart and her feelings and than she puts them in her writing and will make it the most amazing story of it kind.

Wild Swans essays

Wild Swans essays Wild Swans: Three Daughter of China Wild Swans is a gripping account of the lives of three generations of women in 20th century China. Jung Chung is the author of this book, and the third of these heroic women. Born in China in 1952, she has successfully and vividly documented the lives of herself, her mother, and her grandmother during the many changes China has endured. The story starts off with the life of Jung Chungs grandmother born in 1909. Analyse the Causes and Consequences of the Arab-Israeli war of 1967

Foreword Throughout history, the result of the regional / world war, at least politically, changed the way of the nation. War is not usually done without reasons and reasons; for reasons or for other reasons. Sometimes they struggle to expand territory, economic problems or even the existence of the country. The end result of any war will affect the country concerned, its population and the area where it occurs. This also applies to the 1967 Arab - Israel war. This document as a whole analyzes Zionism as the three main causes of the 1948 Arab - Israel War, Arab Nationalism, British foreign policy, and the conclusion of the 1948 Arab - Israel war. It is a very complex conflict with its origins dating back to the Bible era. The influence of World War I and World War II led to the British foreign policy of delivering the Palestinian Council to the United Nations. And it led to Israel's declaration of independence. This declaration caused confusion between Jews and Arabs and caused war. The outcome of this war was disastrous in shaping Middle Eastern politics to this day. Hinchcliffe pointed out that since 1982, there has been no massive military confrontation between Israel and its alabas and lack of meaningful peace continued until the end of the century ( Hinchcliffe 2001, p. 9). The 6-day war was also known as the June War or the Third Arab-Israel War, but from June 5 to 10, 1967 and the third short war in the Arab-Israel war . Israel's decisive victory included occupation of the Sinai Peninsula, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank district, Old Town of Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, but the status of these territories subsequently became a major problem of the Arab-Israel conflict . Before the war started, Israel's retaliation costed a great deal, as Palestinian guerrilla groups led by Syria, Lebanon and Jordan increased attacks on Israel. In November 1966 Israel attacked Alsam village on the western coast of Jordan, Israel Air Force shot down six Syrian MiG fighter plane in the air battle with Syria in April 1967 when 18 people were killed and 54 people were injured did.

Fate, Destiny, and Predestination in Beowulf Essay -- Epic of Beowulf E

Fate, Destiny, and Predestination in Beowulf An epic story is one that combines elements of supernatural powers and heroic deeds with plebeian troubles. In Beowulf , the unknown author paints a typical yet magnificent tale that is one of the great epic chronicles of the Middle Ages. Like the poems of Homer, Beowulf possesses terrible monsters, men with supernatural powers, the search for glory, and deadly defeats. However, this medieval account brings a new element into the folds: the association between established religious forces and personal choices. The concepts of predestination and fate intertwine in this work with the idea of free will. Throughout the poem, characters struggle to understand who and/or what is the guiding force for actions and events. Although this answer remains a mystery, many proverbs and traditions hint at the proper way to live and act. The advice, "Let whoever can/ win glory before death" (lines 1387-8), exalts the idea that champions are the most likely to live a bountiful life and are the ones who uphold the highest ideals in society. Bravery and wise choices create circumstances that cannot determine a future, but can help to lead a man to his predetermined best end. A specific incident in Beowulf exemplifies this connection among free will, glory, and predestination. Beowulf's fight with the dragon and dying words demonstrate the overarching idea that although fate, destiny, and God work to direct a man toward his death, free will and the glory acquired because of it determine how a man is remembered and honored during his life. In a society like Beowulf's, ruled by kings and noblemen, destiny is the most common indication of greatness; accordingly, destiny itself is measured most oft... ... and King Beowulf's dying words, the reader begins to form a clear picture of the warrior's motivations for previous decisions in the poem. Awareness of the lack of fear of death is an important ingredient to understanding the sometimes rash actions of the protagonist. The apparent non-conflict that Beowulf demonstrates in this final scene between free will and fate allows previous choices to have merit and credibility. In the final lines of Beowulf's life, the reader sees the transition between the living and eternal worlds occur in the hero. Because he clearly gains honor and admiration in life due to his choices and will go on to claim his fated seat among the kings in the heavens, Beowulf is the example of this epic poem's declaration to attain glory in both life and death.
